The story
Valentine was a priest of Rome martyred in the third century, and the day was his feast. Its link with love began with Chaucer in the fourteenth century, who wrote that the birds choose their mates on Saint Valentine's Day, and by the fifteenth the lovers of England and France were exchanging verses. Printed cards came with the penny post in the 1840s, and Esther Howland of Massachusetts built the first Valentine card business.
The day reached India with the satellite channels of the 1990s and is kept in the cities with roses, cards and dinner; the objection to it in some quarters has become an annual news story of its own.
