The story
Spain marks the date as the Fiesta Nacional and as the Día de la Hispanidad, for the shared language and history of the Spanish-speaking world.
The same date is read very differently on the other side of that voyage: several Latin American countries keep it as the Día de la Raza or the Day of Indigenous Resistance, and parts of the United States have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day. It is one date and more than one meaning.
